» INFLUENTIAL EVENTS:
Knifehead and the death of Yancy Becket
Raleigh was always closest to his older brother Yancy, who was the one that encouraged him to join the Jaeger program. Although Yancy is the more naturally talented soldier, it turns out that the two are drift compatible and they become copilots. Drifting is a full sharing of minds, and considering the brothers had already decided to focus their lives on one another after their parents' separation and the death of their mother, the constant drifts during training and missions strengthens their bond considerably. They live completely in sync, spending most of their off hours together as well. Raleigh and Yancy come as a pair, and though they may butt heads from time to time (they're not literally the same person, after all) are ultimately pretty inseparable. They finish each other's thoughts and can no longer finish a game of chess because it'll always end in a stalemate. They fight exceptionally well together in Gipsy Danger and in general, a pilot doesn't outlive their partner. When a Jaeger goes down, they're both dead.
When Knifehead appears off the coast of Alaska, Raleigh and Yancy are sent to kill it before it can make land. They're ordered to hold position and protect the city but Yancy spots a fishing boat trapped out in the storm and Raleigh, who is not fantastic at following orders, wants to save it. They make it to the boat in time, moving it out of the way and engaging the Kaiju... but Knifehead proves to be smarter than they anticipated. It plays dead and catches them off guard, tearing Gipsy's arm off and stunning Raleigh. They can't counter in time and somehow, Knifehead knows where they are, knows that the Jaeger is a piloted thing. It rips into Gipsy to get to them and grabs Yancy, tearing him from the conn pod. Raleigh feels his brother's death through the drift before the neural link is severed, and is left to finish the fight alone. Something only one other pilot has ever done. He manages to kill Knifehead and get what's left of Gipsy back to land, where he collapses injured and traumatized on the shore.
The loss of his brother cripples Raleigh, who is lost to grief and the emptiness in his mind where Yancy used to be. He is discharged from the Jaeger program and goes to work on the anti-Kaiju wall instead, a damaged shell of a person who just lives from one moment to the next, taking the most dangerous tasks because what does it matter anymore? He knows the wall won't do any good, but it's something to keep busy with. He engages with nothing and no one, and doesn't want to ever again. The last thing he wants is to drift again, to let someone else into his head, but then the day comes that what's left of the PPDC wants him back. They're readying a final strike and Pentecost comes to Raleigh asking if he wants to die on the wall or in a Jaeger, and although it's enough to make Raleigh go along, he's still not particularly enthused. Until...
Drifting with Mako Mori
Once he's decided to drift again, Raleigh is actively involved in choosing his new copilot. To him, the best candidate is Mako, who is not only an exceptional pilot in simulations but was able to match and ultimately best him in a fight. They don't have much in common, but they fell into sync on the mat and he knows she's skilled and driven. Pentecost ultimately denies the partnership, and so Raleigh shows up for the test in Gipsy not knowing who he'll be paired with. To his surprise it's Mako after all, and they turn out to have a very strong connection. Even stronger than he had with Yancy, which throws Raleigh for a bit of a loop and as he thinks of his brother he falls out of sync. He recovers quickly, pulling himself back out of the memory of his brother's death, but thanks to his slip Mako is lost in her own memory of the Kaiju attack that killed her parents. Raleigh follows her in and watches young Mako fleeing from the monster, and learns that Pentecost was a pilot of the Jaeger who saved her life. This not only gives him further insight into both of these characters, but also boosts his own motivation to stop the Kaiju. And as reluctant as he was to drift again, he's glad he did. They become very close, and it's the first time since his brother's death that Raleigh has connected with anyone. For someone who lives day to day and actively avoids others, this is a very big deal. The successful drift changes his outlook. He's invested in something again, beyond his intial agreement to come back to the PPDC. It's not just that he's willing to fight, now, it's that he's found something worth saving, maybe something worth living for past this next fight. It's a first step to finally healing from Yancy and rejoining the world.
Operation Pitfall and closing the Breach
The mission to close the breach is extremely risky, especially after a separate Kaiju attack cripples their forces. Four functioning Jaegers becomes two, and as new facts about the Breach are revealed, the characters come to understand that this is a suicide mission. Pentecost (who already knew that piloting again would kill him) and Chuck sacrifice themselves so that Mako and Raleigh will have a better chance of success, but just dropping a nuke is no longer an option. They will have to use Gipsy herself as the bomb and ride a Kaiju into the Breach, a journey from which they may never return. Mako's air supply is compromised in the fight and Raleigh makes a decision -- he gives her his oxygen and ejects her life pod to complete the mission alone. He's piloted solo before and Gipsy is so damaged that the reactor will need to be armed manually, within the Breach. It's more important to him that Mako lives. If he can pull this off, she represents the future that he'd be saving. He manages to eject his own pod but there are no guarantees he won't be caught in the blast or subsequent destruction of the portal. But finally, Raleigh is thinking of the future.
» FIT: Although he has no experience with outer space, Raleigh is skilled in construction and fairly intelligent, picking up new skills with ease. His piloting experience will likely translate to different interfaces and he's also a good fighter outside of a Jaeger, should scuffles occur.
» POWERS: Raleigh is a normal human, no superpowers, however he is drift partners with Mako Mori. When two people drift strongly they often experience "ghost drifting" and can pick up on each other's emotions even without an active neural link. It's not quite a psychic ability since it's limited to one person, but might be worth mentioning?
